There has been a long standing relationship between the one of the smallest European countries and the one of the smallest African Countries. Luxembourg and Cape Verde share solidarity and a mutual respect. These two countries co-operate on areas, such as education, social development and sustainable energy. This relationship dates back to the late 1980’s and then the signing of a first cooperation agreement in 1993.

Now 10m euros of financial support from Luxembourg has been announced. This is to help the Cape Verde Government in its ‘transition and mobilisation’ of water and sanitation in 2025. The ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg made the announcement. This grant is part of 40m euros being provided over a four year period. This funding is intended to assist Cape Verde with the ability to prioritise its climate action. The ambassador stated that his country would continue to support Cape Verde during 2025. This being based on Cape Verde being a ‘victim of climate change’ and not being a gas emitter. The ambassador also said that Luxembourg’s support also aims to ensure that Cape Verde can participate in the next climate change COP, which will be held in Brazil in November 2025.

Climate change affects every country in the world, but small developing countries such as Cape Verde need assistance to adapt to the changes in climate. Cape Verde is a country with reliable sunshine and wind and so it has the potential to benefit from solar, wind and wave power. However, these alternative energy sources require significant financial investment. Support from European countries, such as this financial support from Luxembourg, is therefore welcomed.
