It is alarming to have read the recent press releases about the illness and death of some people whilst on holiday in Cape Verde. Since 2022 six British tourists have died in Cape Verde, or following a visit to the country. From all the reports it is clear that all those affected with illness were staying in the all-inclusive hotels. Reports mention the Riu Palace Santa Maria and the Riu Funana hotels on the island of Sal. People affected have also reported that they only ate within their hotel. Media reports imply that the fault lies with Cape Verde. In our opinion that is wholly unjust. It is not a country-wide issue, but confined to one or two all-inclusive hotels. Legal action is being currently taken against the holiday company TUI, which is the main package holiday company serving Cape Verde.

Cape Verde welcomes approximately one million tourists each year. Many of these people stay in these all-inclusive hotels as part of a package holiday. However, thousands of other people stay in smaller, family run hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation. If you are self-catering in an apartment or villa you are in control of your food hygiene. We have been visiting Cape Verde for 20 years, sometimes going twice a year and always self-catering. But we also eat out in some of the lovely restaurants that are found on each of the islands. We have never had any problems.
