Maio reforestation project

The Maio Biodiversity Foundation (Fundação Maio Biodiversidade) has planted over 2,500 plants on the island of Maio. FMB has distributed about 3,000 fruit-bearing species to various communities on the island. All of this is part of a reforestation programme on the island. The aim of this is to increase the amount of vegetation cover on the island, reduce soil erosion and absorb more carbon. In addition, it will improve biodiversity on Maio and also the residents’ well-being.

Part of the programme also includes the removal of over 3,000 invasive species such as acacias. The new plants chosen will adapt to the climate on the island and they are not invasive species. All of this will help to improve the climate resilience and preserve the ecology. All the plants involved were cultivated in three nurseries maintained by FMB.
