The island of Maio has traditionally been one of the islands with the fewest regular transport connections. This lovely island is the closest to the capital, Praia (on Santiago island), but travel to Maio has been difficult. In the past there have been only two, or at most, three flights a week and two or three ferries a week. This causes difficulties, especially when, for various reasons, the boat or the plane are cancelled. However, there are now more connections to the island.

Cabo Verde Airlines are currently flying four days a week. CV Interilhas, which operates the ferries, announced that there will be five sailings per week in July. It is unclear whether this increased number of sailings is permanent, but it is to be hoped that it is. CV Interilhas only publish schedules about a month at a time. Looking at the schedules for August, it appears that it might reduce to four a week, but that is still an improvement.

What is most important for the island is that the boat is regular and reliable. Maio relies on it for supplies of all kinds. There have been times in the past when the shops were almost empty. More frequent ferries will make it easier for residents in Praia to visit Maio for a short break. It will also make it easier for tourists to the country to plan their holiday on the island. The peace, the white long sandy beaches and the clear waters remain the main attractions. For those looking for a relaxing authentic destination Maio is ideal.
