We reported in February 2023 that an English-Creole dictionary had been published. We are excited to share that there is online dictionary Creole (Kriolu). A whole new way of learning the local dialect. Two young Cape Verdeans have created an online English-Creole dictionary. Whilst the official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole is used in most day to day conversations and communications. The versions of Creole vary from area to area and this new online dictionary contains two versions of the language – one from the Sotavento islands and one from the Barlavento islands. The Sotavento islands are in the south of the country – Brava, Fogo, Santiago and Maio. The Barlavento islands are in the north – Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Santa Luzia, Sal and Boa Vista.

Suely Neves and Edmar Gonçalves commenced this project in 2019 and it is still being developed. If a word or phrase translation is requested that has not yet been added to the data base, it will be considered for addition. In Creole the word is usually translated as Kriolu or Kriole. Consquently the dictionary website is www.kriolish.com. It is free to use but users will benefit from opening an account. People need to use this website and suggest translations that are missing, so that the resource is expanded and becomes more useful.
