The African Development Bank has announced that it will provide 19.6m euros for more renewable energy in Cape Verde. This money will fund the Cabeólica Phase II Expansion project. This will be the country’s first integrated renewables project, combining wind power with battery storage. This project was original started in 2012 and this expansion will increase the wind capacity by 13.5 megawatts, with 26 megawatts of battery storage. The result should generate in excess of 60 gigawatt-jours per annum. This will significantly reduce CO2 emissions. This project will contribute to the government’s aim of generating 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030. Cabeólica S.A is an independent energy producer. Cape Verde is ideally suited to wind power and solar energy.

There are currently wind farms on the islands of Boa Vista, Sal, Santiago and São Vicente.
