A Starlink update. In April 2024 we reported that Elon Musk’s Starlink services would be available to the whole of Cape Verde in 2025. In October this year the Agência Reguladora Multissectorial da Economia (ARME) announced that it had authorised Starlink to commence satellite internet services. The authority announced that “Starlink Cabo Verde requested an authorisation from ARME to provide electronic communications services accessible to citizens throughout the country”. ARME is based in Praia on the island of Santiago.

This means that in addition to the existing terrestrial networks, there will be high speed connectivity to satellite services. This will be particularly helpful in areas of the country where there is poor, or indeed no current coverage. The decision to grant Starlink permission to operated within the Cape Verde territory is in line with ARME’s commitment to make sure that there is a competitive market that is of benefit to residents and the promotion of improvements to the quality of the services on offer.
